In 2005, Darla
founded the "Oklahoma Literacy Summit", a program designed to promote
solutions to illiteracy to further advance and promote existing
literacy programs as well as create awareness additional programs
should be implemented. In 2005 and 2006, Darla served as co-chair
of the Oklahoma Centennial Book Festival, an annual statewide literary
event. Darla’s series, books and appearances have received exceptional
reviews and commentaries in numerous publications, such as Cat Fancy
magazine, New Mexico magazine, the Dallas Morning News, Animal Sheltering
magazine, the Sunday Oklahoman, Tulsa World, Springfield News, Amarillo
Globe, the Santa Fe New Mexican, and South Pacific blog by noted
travel author David Stanley. Darla has had appearances and interviews
on television and radio shows, including KSPI’s Life Today, OETA,
KVOO radio, KXY radio, and KKVV Radio, Las Vegas. She has had numerous
book signings nationwide at Barnes and Noble, Borders and Waldenbooks
bookstores, including multiple signing’s in Los Angeles, Dallas,
Santa Fe, Bar Harbor, St. Louis, Springfield, Colorado Springs,
Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Las Vegas.
In addition
to being a children's author, Darla
has also written, performed and recorded her original music. In
2005, Darla made her singing debut to a major audience where she
performed before over 7,500 people in concert as the opening act
for country legend Willie Nelson. Finding your Dream has been recommended
by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The HSUS has
over 7,000,000 members and is the largest humane society in the
world. Darla has received recognition and certificates of appreciation
from numerous humane societies for her help in teaching children
and adults about the importance of helping homeless animals. Darla
lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma with her husband, Bill
Zuhdi,
and five cats. She also travels around the nation for various book
signings and as a featured speaker at libraries, writers’ groups
and grade schools.
